Supporters of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, have rejected the purported emergence of former Bauchi State Governor, Mohammed Abdullahi Abubakar (M.A. Abubakar), as the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate for the 2027 election, describing the process as unconstitutional and lacking legitimacy.
Addressing journalists in Bauchi on Tuesday, members of the Executive Committee of the Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar Foundation, led by Shehu Barau Ningi, said no governorship primary election had been conducted in the state and questioned how any aspirant could have been declared the party’s candidate.
The group disclosed that it had formally petitioned the APC National Chairman, Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, urging the party to reverse what it described as the “selection” of M.A. Abubakar and instead consider Ambassador Tuggar for the party’s governorship ticket.
According to the group, M.A. Abubakar’s public statements on how he emerged as the candidate were contradictory, noting that he initially claimed all aspirants had unanimously endorsed him before later saying he won a primary election.
The foundation insisted that no such primary election took place anywhere in Bauchi State, arguing that the conflicting claims had raised doubts about the credibility of the process.
It also warned that the controversy was fueling dissatisfaction within the party and could weaken the APC’s chances in the 2027 governorship election if not addressed.
The group urged the party’s national leadership to review the matter in the interest of justice, internal democracy and party unity.
