…Says state mustn’t be turned into a slaughter ground
The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Benue State, on Thursday, expressed profound concern at the weak responses of the state government under the leadership of Governor Hyacinth Alia over incessant killing of citizens by invading herdsmen terrorists.
The party lamented that the government’s response to frequent killing of farmers, students, and ordinary citizens has indeed “Fallen short of the urgency and leadership expected at such a critical time”.
In its reaction to the gruesome assassination of a 58-year-old Professor Gabriel Saawua Nyityo of the Department of History at the Moses Orshio Adasu University, Makurdi, his 18-year-old younger brother and the former Secretary to the State Government, Prof. David Salifu, the PDP called for urgent action to end the killings.
The State Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Mr Bright Yima Antyo, in a statement, said it was “disturbing that while Benue continues to lose distinguished sons and daughters, the response of the state government has fallen short of the urgency and leadership expected at such a critical time”.
“Condolences alone are not enough. The people of Benue deserve decisive action, not routine expressions of sympathy after lives have been lost.
“Benue must never be turned into a slaughter ground where respected individuals, public servants, farmers, students and ordinary citizens are murdered with reckless abandon while fear becomes the new normal.
“Every life lost is a tragic indictment of a failed promise and leadership to the people”.
The party called on Governor Hyacinth Alia to demonstrate stronger leadership by working closely with security agencies, strengthening community-based security measures, ensuring that perpetrators are apprehended and prosecuted, and providing practical support to affected families of victims.
The PDP said it stands firmly with the people of Benue in demanding justice for the murdered Professor Iorngee, his younger brother and Professor David Salifu and every innocent victim of insecurity across the state.
