Nigeria’s Super Falcons and the Indomitable Lionesses of Cameroon will clash in the quarterfinals of the WAFCON 2026 on Sunday, 9 August 2026, with the automatic ticket to the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil at stake.
The WAFCON champions recovered from a rocky group-stage start—including a shock defeat to debutants Malawi—to reach the last eight.
Cameroon finished top of a group that had Ghana, Mali and Cape Verde to set up the clash with Nigeria.
This is not the first time the Super Falcons and the Indomitable Lionesses will clash in the knockout stage of the WAFCON, as the two teams have had numerous encounters in past tournaments.
Ahead of Sunday’s tie, Completesports.com’s JAMES AGBEREBI reveals the outcomes of the 10 previous WAFCON knockout games between the two sides.
Nigeria 6-0 Cameroon (WAFCON 1998 – Semifinal)
After a dominant group-stage performance, where they defeated Morocco (8-0), DR Congo (6-0) and Egypt (6-0), the Super Falcons faced Cameroon in the semifinal of the 1998 WAFCON held in Nigeria.
After 90 minutes, the Nigeria made light work of the Indomitable Lionesses, hammering them 6-0 to qualify for the final.
In the final, the Super Falcons beat rivals Ghana 2-0 to clinch the first of their 10 WAFCON titles.
Nigeria 5-0 Cameroon (WAFCON 2004 – Final)
The Super Falcons faced Cameroon twice (group stage and final) at the WAFCON 2004, which was hosted by South Africa.
In the group-stage encounter, Cameroon came back twice to force the Nigerian team to a 2-2 draw, with both teams eventually advancing to the semifinals.
In the semifinal, Cameroon edged out Ghana 1-0 after extra time while the Super Falcons trounced Ethiopia 4-0 to set up a rematch with the Lionesses.
The final turned out to be a one-sided affair as the Super Falcons won 5-0, with legendary striker Perpetual Nkwocha netting four goals and Vera Okolo getting a solitary strike.
Nigeria 5-0 Cameroon (WAFCON 2006 – Semifinal)
The WAFCON 2006 edition, staged in Nigeria, saw the Super Falcons take on Cameroon in the semifinal.
To get to the last four, Nigeria eased through their group-stage campaign following wins against South Africa, Algeria and Equatorial Guinea.
For Cameroon, they managed to go through in second place with four points behind Ghana, who secured nine points.
Just like in the WAFCON 2004 final, it was another one-sided encounter as the Super Falcons triumphed 5-0 and faced Ghana in the final, whom they pipped 1-0.
Nigeria 1-1 Cameroon: Super Falcons won 4-3 on penalty shootout (WAFCON 2008 – Third Place)
After featuring in five consecutive WAFCON finals, the run came to an end at the 2008 edition as hosts Equatorial Guinea pipped the Super Falcons 1-0 in the semifinal.
The Super Falcons then faced Cameroon in the third-place match and won 4-3 on penalties after regulation time finished 1-1.
Equatorial Guinea went on to become champions after edging out South Africa 1-0 in the final.
Nigeria 5-1 Cameroon (WAFCON 2010 – Semifinal)
For the third time, the Super Falcons clashed with Cameroon in the WAFCON semifinal when both teams crossed paths at the 2010 edition in South Africa.
Just like in 1998 and 2006, the Super Falcons once again emerged on top, thanks to a dominant 5-1 victory which saw them return to the final after missing out at the 2008 tournament.
The final was between the Super Falcons and defending champions Equatorial Guinea, which the Nigerian team won 4-2.
Cameroon 1-0 Nigeria (WAFCON 2012 – Third Place)
Cameroon ended their losing streak against the Super Falcons in the knockout stages of the WAFCON when they clashed in the third-place match at the 2012 tournament in Equatorial Guinea.
Following a 1-0 defeat to South Africa in the semifinal, the Super Falcons met Cameroon in the third-place fixture, which the latter won 1-0.
The final saw Equatorial Guinea clinch their second title thanks to a 4-0 thumping of South Africa.

Nigeria 2-0 Cameroon (WAFCON 2014 – Final)
The 2014 WAFCON final was contested between the Super Falcons and Cameroon.
This was the second time the two sides would take on each other in the final after their first clash in 2004, which the Super Falcons won 5-0.
And after 90 minutes of football, the Super Falcons came out 2-0 winners to reclaim the WAFCON title.
Nigeria 1-0 Cameroon (WAFCON 2016 – Final)
The Indomitable Lionesses were hosts of the 2016 WAFCON and had a wonderful run up to the final.
The team won all their group-stage fixtures and also their semifinal encounter without conceding a single goal.
Unfortunately, it was a sad end for them as they fell 1-0 to the Super Falcons in the final following a late goal by Desire Oparanozie.
Nigeria 0-0 Cameroon: Super Falcons won 4-2 on penalty shootout (WAFCON 2018 – Semifinal)
The 2018 edition in Ghana pitched the Super Falcons and Cameroon against each other in the semifinal once again.
Both teams failed to break the deadlock after 90 minutes and extra time, forcing the game to be decided via a penalty shootout.
After the end of the spot kicks, the Super Falcons won 4-2 and progressed to the final, where they also beat South Africa in the penalty shootout (4-3) to defend their title.
Nigeria 1-0 Cameroon (WAFCON 2022 – Quarterfinal)
The Super Falcons and Cameroon were drawn against each other in the quarterfinal of the 2022 edition in Morocco.
After a keenly contested encounter, the Super Falcons finally broke the deadlock through Rasheedat Ajibade’s second-half goal.
However, the Super Falcons lost on penalties to hosts Morocco in the semifinal and also fell 1-0 to Zambia in the third-place match.
